Baker College faces federal investigation for recruitment, marketing practices

Baker College is under federal investigation for its recruitment and marketing practices after a Detroit Free Press article spotlighted those same issues.
“The U.S. Department of Education, through the Office of Federal Student Aid, has initiated a formal investigation of the institution related to its recruitment and marketing practices,” The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) wrote in a June 20 public disclosure of its “Governmental Investigation” designation for Baker College based in Owosso.
The college issued a statement Monday evening on the investigation by federal officials.
“Baker College received an information request from the U.S. Department of Education in connection with a Department investigation. Baker is also aware it was assigned a designation of ‘Governmental Investigation’ by the Higher Learning Commission, based on the Department’s request,” Baker College Board Chair Dr. Denise Bannan wrote in a statement released just after 7 p.m. Monday.
She continued that “Baker College remains accredited, is cooperating with the Department’s request, and takes its obligations under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 seriously.”
