CECU statement on Markey/Durbin letter advocating broad student loan forgiveness under BDR
This letter wrongly implies that BDR is a mechanism for broad student loan forgiveness, an implication that the courts have decisively rejected.
Arlington, VA – CECU’s Senior Vice President, Legislative and Regulatory Affairs, Jordan Wicker, released the following statement:
Borrower Defense to Repayment is a regulatory process authorized by Congress, which provides narrow authority for its use. The courts have enjoined the most recent BDR rule, finding that it is excessively broad and greatly exceeds congressional authority. This letter wrongly implies that BDR is a mechanism for broad student loan forgiveness, an implication that the courts have decisively rejected.
